DESCRIPTION:Dear all\,\n\nNext week\, we will be hosting an experimental an
d completely informal LIGHTNING TALKS SESSION!\n\nI agree\; it will be rat
her silly. But we can still try!\n\n=== WHAT IS IT? ===\n\nThe idea is sim
	ple:\n\n#1 -- Pick a topic\;\n#2 -- Prepare a VERY SHORT presentation\, an
d\n#3 -- Deliver it.\n\nIn Step #1\, the only constraint we suggest (but w
ill not enforce)\nis that the topic is something pertaining to computers i
n general:\nfrom a short introduction to your favourite esoteric pet progr
amming\nlanguage\, to a hilarious tale about why you think UNIX userland t
	ools\nare rubbish\, or even a post-structuralist\, Derrida-esque analysis
of\n"2001: A Space Odyssey" and the topic of intelligence and machines\,\n
anything goes!\n\nRe Step #2\, I suggest the absolute\, hard time limit is
5 MINUTES\; this\nwill be strict\, and we will make sure you will be heck
led if you go on\na second longer. An extra 2 minutes will be allocated to
questions. Oh\,\nand a timer will be provided!\n\nAnd\, finally\, for Ste
p #3: if you wish to use slides\, we will provide\na computer\, running so
me fancy operating system made by Microsoft\, a PDF\nviewer\, and most pro
bably Microsoft PowerPoint as well. We can probably\nplug your own laptop
in on the data projector (yes\, there will be one of\nthem!)\, but I would
n't bet on it.\n\n=== ORIGINS ===\n\nThe idea of lightning talks was first
implemented in a Python conference\,\nalthough it seems Perlistas (yes\,
Perl programmers\, and my pun is terrible)\nhave trademarked the idea. Her
	e's some (wise\, unlike their horrendous\nprogramming language) advice\, a
	pparently stemming from experience:\n\n---> http://www.perl.com/pub/2004/0
7/30/lightningtalk.html\n\n=== WHY ARE WE DOING THIS ===\n\nThere are many
reasons.\n\nQuite a few of us seem to have some sort of 'techical experie
nce' in\nvarious technologies\; it seems like a good idea to start communi
cating\nto each other what we're doing outside Oxford but within computers
: you\nnever know whom you might excite!\n\nFurthermore\, it would be a go
od idea to practice our talking: no matter\nthe sort of profession\, job o
r vocation most of us will follow after\nleaving Oxford\, it will most pro
bably involve some requirement for\n'talking skills.' This is a good oppor
tunity to practice an extreme\nside of your ability to speak to an audienc
e.\n\nFinally\, if we keep the atmosphere informal enough\, it will be a g
ood\nlaugh. You'll get probably get to hear some interesting things\, or h
eckle.\nAnd if you speak\, you'll get to say something interesting\, or be
heckled.\nBoth are excellent opportunities to practice our repressed hool
iganism and\nstretch the limits of our self-confidence!\n\n=== WHO & WHERE
===\n\nAs usual\, the Oxford CompSoc.\n\nThe Place: St Catz' JCR Lecture
Theatre\n\nAs always\, instructions will be provided in good time\, for th
ose who haven't\nyet showed up to any of our events\n\nThe Time: WEDNESDAY
	 of WEEK 4 (02 Nov)\, 8:15pm - 10:00pm\n\nThis implies we could accommodat
e up to approximately 10 speakers.\n(Note that the termcard has put this e
vent down on Thursday. Maybe\nit is time to publish the full errata for it
...)\n\n=== I WANT TO SPEAK ===\n\nExcellent\; then show up!\n\nIf you can
\, do e-mail us in advance about your wish to speak. It will still be\nfin
e if you show up without notice\, though.\n\n\nSo\; have a very good weeke
	nd!\n\n\nBest\,\n\nAlex
